Problem

In 2024, Pragma to successfully delivered a rebuild of cer.gov.au. This included extensive user research, content, design and technical rebuilding. A key goal of the project was to improve the website user experience through an overhaul of the information architecture, user pathways, design elements and components, readability, and accessibility.

Outcomes

We provided a multi-disciplinary team-as-a-service offering to research, design, develop and implement CER’s new website. In delivering the project we consulted more than 200 stakeholders and users, both internal and external. We aimed to deliver a modern website that helps users find what they need, promoting trust and transparency in the work of CER.

Activities included:

  • IA Design and Testing: To inform the development of a new information architecture (IA) we began with an in-depth content audit evaluating thousands of pages of existing pages against usage data, accessibility and reading level. Paired with insights from user research, we developed a new IA to improve site navigation and content discovery. We conducted ‘treejack’ testing over three rounds, iterating the IA as we learned from users.
  • Technical evaluation and website build: Our technical consultants and web developers worked closely with the CER website team to identify requirements for the new website, addressing known pain points and enhancing current functionality. Our team conducted an in-depth assessment of platform hosting options and security considerations. Our team then build the new website from the ground up, including many complex features and data display solutions.
  • Content Redevelopment and redesign: Using the content management tool GatherContent and the new IA, we redeveloped 260 pages of high priority content. Our process was rigorous, ensuring all content adhered to the Australian Government Style Manual as well as business needs.
  • Close engagement: We had a close working relationship with CER, connecting daily to discuss priorities and ensure we understood the complex work delivered by CER, much of which is guided by legislation. We engaged with more than 110 subject matter experts within the agency, and facilitated multiple workshops, codesign sessions and one-on-one pair writing.

Together with CER, we delivered a website that is user-centred, easy-to-navigate, easy-to-read, compliant with Australian Government accessibility standards (WCAG 2.0 Level AA) and demonstrates best-practice design.
